Do you know the value of a bit? Would you hazard a guess at the size of a byte? Did you even know there was a difference? Would you even care?
There was a time when considerations like these dictated whether or or not myself and many like me were going to have a good day. In the past when designing for the web, many an artistic flourish was stripped to within an inch of its life in order to make it as lite weight as possible in preparation for its journey across the web.
Thankfully, since the advent of hi-speed broadband, things have tilted in the opposite direction. Instead of patiently watching and waiting as relatively modest sized jpeg painfully assembles itself on screen, we now anticipate our next click or tap before the page has even loaded. As the web has become faster, our collective attention span has diminished. When presented with a well crafted, well thought out landing page, its likely that most of us will glance around the age looking for the easiest way in to the content. We look for the simplest way to digest the messages on the page without having to do any work. This is why video has become so important. It allows for an instant hit of information.
Combined Media were asked by Debra Ireland to create a video piece that would help to explain the rare skin condition ‘Epidermolysis bullosa’ also known as EB. We developed a full script, before and producing all story boarding and animation. The video has since gone on to be used by Debra’s sister charities in the UK, Australia and Spain.
The advent of video delivery platforms such as YouTube and Vimeo, have lead to the development of an art form in itself. Video content that is short and sharp, packs a punch. This is one of the main reasons that I think explainer videos have become such an important medium of web based communication. Apart from the ease of delivery to the use, the key to their effectiveness is that they can make even the most complicated concepts clear and simple to understand and in a very short space of time. Put simply, video makes life simple.
As our expectations are shaped by the language of YouTube and Vimeo Video is no longer a nice to have, it has become an essential component of web communication – all the answers contained in a simple Play button. More and more, users have become conditioned to scan for the play button. Users simply have to press the play button and let the screen do the rest.
There are numerous ways you can get your video presentations to your customers. You can upload to your website, produce a copy on DVD, have a copy on mobile devices and so on. Read more here.
